St. Louis Tornado Kills at Least 5, Dozens Injured
Earlier on Friday, a powerful tornado struck the St. Louis area, killing at least five people and injuring dozens more. Local hospitals treated numerous storm-related injuries as the National Weather Service had issued alerts for an “extremely dangerous tornado.”
St. Louis Mayor Cara Spencer described the scene as catastrophic, with “a lot of roofs missing” and multiple collapsed buildings. Emergency teams and over 500 first responders are continuing searches through the wreckage. A city-wide curfew was enacted from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. in hard-hit zones.
Damage Spreads Across Missouri, Indiana, and Illinois
Further south in Missouri’s Scott County, two more people died and many were injured as tornadoes leveled entire neighborhoods. Sheriff Derick Wheetley described parts of the county as “unrecognizable.”
The storms also caused significant damage in parts of Indiana and Illinois, with thousands of homes affected and power outages still ongoing.
Power Outages and Emergency Declarations
More than 700,000 homes and businesses across the Midwest and Great Lakes remain without power. States like Kentucky and Missouri were among the hardest hit, prompting local and state emergency declarations to mobilize cleanup and support operations.
Officials have emphasized that the priority is saving lives and restoring essential services. Investigations are underway after some tornado sirens failed to activate in St. Louis during the storm.
Severe Weather Threat Continues
The same storm system responsible for Thursday and Friday’s destruction is forecast to bring more severe weather into the weekend. Regions across the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast face risks of damaging wind, hail, and possible tornadoes.
Residents are urged to stay alert, heed weather warnings, and avoid non-essential travel in affected areas. Stay connected with Digital Nomad Diary for continuous updates on this developing weather emergency.
